Hair extension thickness
What exactly are double drawn hair extensions?
We've previously talked about Remy Hair and its importance but now let's discuss how hair extensions are drawn.
there are 2 main catergories which describe the length to tip thickness of a bond or weft of hair, they are
Single drawn and Double drawn
Single drawn Remy hair
is made up of hairs of all different lengths as it grows naturally on the head. The cuticles are intact and these pieces look very natural.
This hair has been placed in a ponytail or braid and then cut from the donor’s head. At this point the very shortest hairs are removed, (the shortest hairs are “drawn” out, hence the name single drawn). This leaves some hairs that are shorter than the full length giving it a slight tapered, layered look.
The advantage of this is it makes for easy blending and the most natural look. The disadvantage is you can often need more hair to make it look full enough.
95% of all classic hair is single drawn. If you want a very thick bottom edge to your client’s hair order the extensions 2”-3” longer than the desired length and trim.
Double drawn Remy hair
is sorted so that all the hairs in a weft are within one or two inches in length. There are not as many shorter hairs in the extensions like single drawn hair, these have been “drawn” out. You usually find most of you premium hair falls into this category, one reason why it’s so much more expensive the classic hair. Please be aware, many companies claim to have double drawn hair but is it does not have this ratio it is not.
The advantage is you always get the length you want without it being too thin at the bottom. A disadvantage is unless you are an expert at cutting with a razor the hair can look doll like and rather fake.
What about hair ratings?
Sites that state A, AA, AAA are stating their own manufacturers grading.
What some companies may call AAA can be equivalent to A in another company so these cannot really be used by technicians to establish the quality due to the inconsistency.
Grading is not based on the quality of the raw material or processing. It is based on how the hair is harvested and the length ratio throughout.
Here at hair rebellion our hair fall between the 2 thickness ratings, We rate it as Medium drawn because we ensure our hair is drawn until it has a majority thickness towards the bottom.
By doing this it means you get the extra thickness towards the ends like double drawn but its not too bulky on the ends and allows for easy blending like single drawn. We also sell our hair as dual lengths ie 16-18" this is so it can be used as double drawn if you are only wanting 16" in length.
This allows us to keep the prices of hair down and pass the savings on to you!
