Remy hair extensions
What exactly are remy hair extensions?
Remy hair is a term a lot in the hair extension industry but it seems even some qualified extensions technicians don’t fully understand what it means.
Basically Remy hair refers to how the hair is harvested from the donor and the manufacturing process,
Unfortunately many companies today are calling their hair Remy and it is not really Remy. True Remy hair has been carefully braided or tied before being cut from the donors head.
This keeps all of the cuticles aligned, thus eliminating tangling and matting. The hair needs to be carefully handled through all colouring processes to keep the cuticle aligned.
Virgin Remy can last up to 2 years, depending on origin. True Non- virgin Remy hair should last 3-9 depending on the processing and lightening it has undertaken. These life spans only apply if correct aftercare products and routines are adhered to.
This is why Remy Human hair produces the best, longest lasting extensions. It is considered to be the top of the line in human hair because the cuticles are kept intact. Maintaining the hairs' cuticles and aligning them in a unidirectional fashion for extensions creates hair that is completely natural in appearance.
If this is not clear, then you have non-Remy hair.
The only way hair extensions are 100% Remy Human Hair is if the cuticle is left intact.
Please always read hair descriptions carefully as this type of hair will not be marketed as non-Remy, it will simply not state “Remy” on the packet or description.
This is the cheapest hair available and is not recommended for long term wear. Non-Remy hair is collected from cutting room floors, hair brushes and anywhere else long hair can be found. It is then thrown in a vat of acid to wash away as much of the cuticle as possible to try to prevent tangling, this is often called ‘CUTICLE CORRECTED HAIR’ (with no cuticle the hair swells terribly with washing and humidity). At this point colouring will take place. The hair is then put in a silicone bath to make it shiny and feel beautiful.
The hair is then aligned and put into wefts, keratin tips or bulk. Chinese hair is the best hair to go through the acid bath because of its strength.
There are some companies who are very good at this process and can produce a product with minimum tangling. The trick for them is to get the entire cuticle off without the acid destroying the hair. Any remaining cuticle will cause matting and tangling as soon as the silicone is washed away.
CUTICLE CORRECTED HAIR SEEMS BEAUTIFUL TO BEGIN WITH BUT WITHIN 2 WEEKS IT WILL LOOK AND FEEL TERRIBLE!
If you’re looking for a new extension brand, make sure to have the manufacturer clarify that the hair is in fact 100% Remy Human Hair with the cuticle intact.
